Introducing Marlon Solomon – Patrick – Bottled Wasps

Marlon plays Patrick in Bottled Wasps – he joined us after answering an open casting call.

He was asked to write something about why he wanted to get involved with us and our production of Bottled Wasps and his experience so far.

Well its three weeks until the first show and we’re just starting to get under the skin of our characters. For the first few rehearsals you’re almost fumbling your way through the play, seeing what works, making choices and becoming comfortable with the other actors. We’re starting to know the play well and as we’re off book from next week that’s when it will really start to take shape.

I find it very odd when I first put down my my script. What am I going to do with my hands? All of a sudden they feel like they are not part of your body – like you have some ridiculous party balloons attached to the end of your arms that everyone’s going to laugh at! It may sound ridiculous but I can even see a favourable review shattered by silly extraneous limbs, “Solomon delivered a strong performance in this excellent production of Bottled Wasps but sadly it was all ruined by his preposterous looking hands.”

I’m playing Patrick. He’s not Irish. He’s usually a very glass-half-full kind of a guy but recent events have stunted that part of his personality somewhat. His optimism for the holiday, he has such high hopes for, doesn’t make it past the few pages. Its not long before he is spitting sarcastic venom in Walter’s direction. He is soon at loggerheads with Grace – (his partner) and this is the biggest challenge for the actor. Patrick is agitated, bored and annoyed pretty much throughout the play. Its finding different levels of irritation and anger whilst remaining truthful to the text that is the big task.

Its my first time working for Organised Chaos and its been great so far. Looking forward to the next three weeks.
